This contemporary new-build garden was designed to be a low maintenance garden for entertaining, with colour and year round interest. I extended the existing terrace making it an L shape so that the table and chairs didn’t obstruct the view of the garden from the French doors. Generous steps lead down to the rest of the garden. The garden is divided into ‘rooms’ by lengths of stylish trellis – originally designed as hedging but for lower maintenance was changed. This, along with specimen trees, give strong structure and form to the garden throughout the year. A modern pergola adds height and will be covered in scented roses and climbers. A new meandering path leads past the water feature, generous border to the new planted gravel seating area. A pergola frames the entrance to the garden studio.
The garden build was completed in October and my clients love it*. Two feature multi-stem amelanchiers give height and drama – repeating the same species adds unity to the space. There is a lovely enclosed gravel area with a seat tucked away behind the first trellis to make the most of the evening sun surrounded by scented planting. The planting includes evergreen shrubs, grasses, ferns and perennials chosen for being easy to maintain, wildlife friendly and suitable for the site and conditions.
