Cotswolds rural garden

This is an established 4 acre garden in the Cotswolds set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It comprises of various areas that need linking to give the site harmony and a connection to the surrounding countryside. My design centres on symmetrical lines of hedges, shrubs and rows of trees to bring uniformity to the irregularly shaped walls, borders and structures within the garden. These forms give continuity to the different areas of the garden – terrace and front lawn, woodland, meadow, pool area, vegetable garden and utility space.

The clients’ brief included creating a ‘quiet garden’ where they could retreat to for peaceful relaxation. I have designed an area bordering the wood and looking out towards the meadow. A restrained planting palette creates a calm and tranquil atmosphere. Informal planting, including some native species, and multi-stemmed trees seamlessly connects the space to the woods behind and field beyond.

The wildlife meadow is found at the outer reaches of the land. A mown path leads to an office building and links it to the rest of the more formal garden area. Estate fencing provides an elegant and appropriate boundary between the meadow and the rear garden. Wildlife meadows take time to establish but with the correct mix of species and land preparation are a valuable addition to the bio-diversity of the garden.

This planting plan is for one of the borders next to the stone terrace at the rear of the property. The style is informal with shrubs giving structure surrounded by drifts of perennials and grasses. Bulbs add to the seasonal interest.
